——————-

Lily is haunted by memories–of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness.

In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu (“women’s writing”). Some girls were paired with laotongs, “old sames,” in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become “old sames” at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their lifelong friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a brilliantly realistic journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful. With the period detail and deep resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha, this lyrical and emotionally charged novel delves into one of the most mysterious of human relationships: female friendship.

“Only the best novelists can do what Lisa See has done, to bring to life not only a character but an entire culture, and a sensibility so strikingly different from our own. This is an engrossing and completely convincing portrayal of a woman shaped by suffering forced upon her from her earliest years, and of the friendship that helps her to survive.”
–Arthur Golden, author of Memoirs of a Geisha

“Lisa See has written her best book yet. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is achingly beautiful, a marvel of imagination of a real and secret world that has only recently disappeared. It is a story so mesmerizing the pages float away and the story remains clearly before us from beginning to end.”
–Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club and The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings

Praise for MINI SHOPAHOLIC

“OMG, if you are a Shopaholic fan, what could be more screamingly funny than the idea of Becky’s toddler just a few years shy of having her own credit card?” — USA Today

“This series is simply Kinsella at her most hilarious best, and this new book is classic “Shopaholic.”— Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“With exceptional comedic timing…this novel is laugh-out-loud funny..” —Roanoke Times

Millions of readers of all ages around the globe have fallen in love with the fiction of #1 New York Times bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, especially the Shopaholic series featuring the endearing Becky Bloomwood. There are more than 20 million copies of her books in print worldwide with new readers falling in love with Kinsella’s irresistible fiction daily. Last fall, Becky Bloomwood reappeared on the scene in MINI SHOPAHOLIC, facing her greatest little challenge yet: her two-year-old daughter, Minnie. An instant New York Times bestseller IN HARDCOVER, the novel will now be published for the first time by the Dial Press in paperback on April 19, 2011.

Nothing comes between Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) and her bargains. Every milestone in her well-shopped life (travel, long-lost sister, marriage, pregnancy) inspires new vistas to explore in the name of retail therapy. While motherhood has been everything Becky dreamed it would be—Baby Dior, Little Marc Jacobs, and Dolce & Gabbana for toddlers—adorable Minnie is wreaking havoc everywhere she goes, from Harrods to her own christening. Her favorite word is “MIIIIIIIIIIIINE!,” and her penchant for Becky’s vintage bags, designer sunglasses, and online purchases has no rival under age five. Needing a break from her parental woes, Becky decides the perfect antidote is a party. And not a run-of-the-mill, simple backyard gathering—but a surprise birthday party for her husband Luke, the man who knows everyone.

Will Becky manage to keep the party of the year a surprise? Can she hire jugglers, fire-eaters, and acrobats at a discount as she’s promised Luke since they’re buying a new home? Will Minnie find a new outlet for her energetic and spirited nature? Where there’s a will, there’s a way (hopefully one with 60% markdowns!) MINI SHOPAHOLIC showcases Sophie Kinsella’s impeccable comic timing and endless optimism with the laugh-out-loud escapades and heartfelt moments her millions of fans crave and love.

Get the Medicine to Go Down

With the advent of chewables and liquids, many of us forget that, at some point in their lives, our children WILL need to know how to swallow a pill. Better to learn young, as the gag reflex only gets stronger with age. One pediatrician suggests starting at age 4 and making a game of it… using a supply of TicTacs and their favorite drink. Have them put the TicTac way at the back of their tongue and then GULP!
